Article 3 - Prestige License Plates and Special Plates for Certain Persons and Vehicles
§ 40-2-85.1. Special License Plates for Certain Veterans

(e.1) The spouse of any person eligible to be issued a special license plate under this Code section shall also be eligible for such license plate, provided that no motor vehicle is registered in the name of the eligible person and all other requirements relating to registration and licensing relative to motor vehicles as prescribed in Article 2 of this chapter have been satisfied.

The 2016 amendment, effective April 26, 2016, in subsection (a), deleted “and” at the end of subparagraph (a)(1)(P), added “; and” at end of subparagraph (a)(1)(Q), and added subparagraph (a)(1)(R); added paragraph (a)(4); in paragraph (b)(1), in the first sentence, substituted “veterans or women veterans,” for “veterans of the armed forces of the United States, or”, and deleted “persons” following “military medal award,”; in subparagraph (b)(2)(A), in the first sentence, inserted “women veterans, who” near the beginning, inserted a comma following “military medal award”, and inserted “who” near the middle, and inserted “a woman veteran’s license plate, a” in the middle; in subparagraph (b)(2)(B), inserted “of the United States” near the beginning of the first sentence, and substituted “$25.00, and such fee” for “$25.00 which fee” in the last sentence; in subsection (c), inserted “a woman veteran’s license plate,” in the first sentence, and substituted “issuing such license plates” for “issuing these license plates” in the second sentence; in subsection (d), inserted “recreational vehicles,” in the first sentence, in the second sentence, substituted “owners who are veterans, who are recipients of a military medal award, or who” for “owners as veterans of the armed forces of the United States, recipients of a military medal award, or persons who”, in the middle, substituted “current or former member” for “veteran”, and inserted “of the United States” near the end; in subsection (e), in the second sentence, deleted “of the armed forces of the United States” following “deceased veteran” near the beginning, substituted “such person,” for “such veteran” in the middle, substituted “person’s death” for “veteran’s death”, and substituted “surviving spouse” for “person” near the end; and added subsection (e.1).
The 2020 amendment, effective August 4, 2020, deleted “and” at the end of subparagraph (a)(1)(Q), substituted “; and” for the period at the end of subparagraph (a)(1)(R), and added subparagraph (a)(1)(S).
The 2021 amendment, effective July 1, 2021, substituted the present provisions of paragraph (a)(3) for the former provisions, which read: “ ‘Veteran’ means a former member of the armed forces of the United States who is discharged from the armed forces under conditions other than dishonorable.”; and added the second and third sentences in subsection (c).
Code Commission notes.
Pursuant to Code Section 28-9-5, in 1994, “in subsection (a) of this Code section” was substituted for “above” in the first sentence in subsection (b).
Pursuant to Code Section 28-9-5, in 2012, “subsection (e)” was substituted for “subsection (d)” in the last sentence of subsection (c) and “subparagraph (b)(2)(A)” was substituted for “subparagraph (a)(2)(A)” in the first sentence of subsection (f).
