The department, in coordination with the United States Geological
Survey National Water Quality Assessment Program, the New York State
Water Resources Institute, and other parties, shall conduct a water
quality monitoring program to provide an adequate understanding of the
health and environmental impacts of pesticide use in the state. The
department shall utilize this program, as it deems necessary, in: making
pesticide registration decisions; reviewing suspensions and
cancellations of pesticide registrations in the state; and assessing the
status, trends, and health impacts of any pesticide contamination of
ground and surface waters on Long Island and throughout the state.
