§1501. Custody of jail and prisoners; jailer
The sheriff has the custody and charge of the county jail and of all prisoners in that jail and shall keep it in person, or by a deputy as jailer, master or keeper. The appointment, discipline, suspension or dismissal of the jailer, master or keeper is subject to section 501.   [PL 1989, c. 6 (AMD); PL 1989, c. 9, §2 (AMD); PL 1989, c. 104, Pt. 1.  Subordinate assistants and employees.  The jailer, master or keeper shall appoint, subject to the requirements of section 501, all subordinate assistants and employees. Subordinate assistants and employees shall be appointed for the same period that is provided for deputy sheriffs under section 381. The professional qualifications required of them must emphasize training or experience in or knowledge of corrections. The jailer, master or keeper and all subordinate assistants and employees are subject to the training requirements of Title 25, section 2804-D.

2.  Compensation.  The pay of the jailer, master or keeper and all subordinate assistants and employees shall be set by the county commissioners and paid by their respective counties, except when otherwise provided by law.

3.  Jailer and subordinates may be deputies.  The jailer and the jailer's subordinate assistants and employees may be deputy sheriffs.
