Chapter 379 - Dentistry
Section 20-108. - Examination of applicants in lieu of one year of postdoctoral general practice or residency program.

The State Dental Commission may, with the consent of the Commissioner of Public Health, accept and approve the results of clinical or practical examinations, subject to such conditions as said commission, with the consent of the Commissioner of Public Health, may prescribe in lieu of the clinically based postdoctoral general practice or specialty dental residency program required pursuant to subsection (a) of section 20-107. On and after July 1, 2021, or upon the State Dental Commission's approval of examinations that do not require the participation of patients, whichever is earlier, such clinical or practical examinations shall not require the participation of patients. Passing scores shall be established by the department with the consent of the commission.

History: 1969 act added provision allowing acceptance of regional test results in lieu of written and practical examinations; P.A. 77-614 required consent of health services commissioner for waiver of written and practical examinations and transferred examinations to jurisdiction of health services department, retaining commission in supervisory capacity, effective January 1, 1979; P.A. 80-484 added provision re establishment of passing scores; P.A. 87-114 added provision re exception to obtaining a license by examination; P.A. 93-381 replaced department and commissioner of health services with department and commissioner of public health and addiction services, effective July 1, 1993; P.A. 93-435 substituted Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations for National Board of Dental Examiners, effective June 28, 1993; P.A. 95-257 replaced Commissioner and Department of Public Health and Addiction Services with Commissioner and Department of Public Health, effective July 1, 1995; P.A. 05-213 designated existing language as Subsec. (b) by requiring director of dental residency program, instead of supervising dentist, to provide documentation of applicant's successful completion of graduate dental training as a resident dentist and deleting provision re documentation to be provided at the end of year of graduate dental training, effective July 12, 2007; P.A. 19-72 deleted Subsec. (b), deleted Subsec. (a) designator and substantially amended provisions including by deleting provisions re examination and adding provisions re clinical or practical examinations and participation of patients, effective January 1, 2020.
