The county medical examiner shall be a physician licensed to practice medicine in Alabama and trained in anatomic and forensic pathology. Any vacancy in the county shall be filled by appointment of the Director of the Department of Forensic Sciences, who may waive the requirement temporarily to appoint a physician licensed to practice medicine and trained in anatomic pathology when a vacancy exists which he or she is seeking to fill.
